Actress Emilie Dequenne, who starred in The Bridge of San Luis Rey alongside Robert De Niro, has died at the age of 43.

Her death comes just days after former co-star Robert De Niro made an appearance on The One Show but left fans concerned.

The Belgian star's family and agent confirmed the sad news after she died on Sunday, in a hospital outside of Paris. It comes less than two years after she was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma, cancer of the adrenal gland.

Emilie shared her diagnosis in October 2023. Then in April 2024 she told fans she was in remission, saying she was determined to get back to her life before.

She said on social media: "I was close to forgetting because I was leaving the hospital today after 13 days. What a tough battle."

Sadly, her illness returned at the end of last year. She said on French show TF1: "I know I will not live as long as planned."

Emilie's first role came in the 1999 film Rosetta. She won a number of awards for it, including Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.

Her acting career continued until 2024, with her final movie appearances being in TKT, Survive and Retro Therapy.

In 2004, she appeared in The Bridge Of San Luis Rey. Based on the novel of the same name by Thornton Wilder, it features an ensemble cast.

Emilie was cast alongside the likes of Hollywood greats Robert De Niro and Kathy Bates. A number of other well known names including Gabriel Byrne, Geraldine Chaplin, Harvey Keitel, John Lynch and Jim Sheridan also appeared.

The film centres around the collapse of a bridge near Lima, Peru at noon on Friday, July 20, 1714. At the time of the collapse, five people were crossing it, while Brother Juniper, played by Byrne, witnessed it.

He then spends sex years researching why God would allow the collapse to happen.

The film's cast and costume were praised, however it generally did badly with critics.

Emilie also appeared in BBC drama The Missing. The series ran from October 2014 to 2016 and followed a husband and wife, played by James Nesbitt and Frances O'Connor, trying to find their missing son.
