— Steve Hawkins, SVP and CISO at Scotiabank

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, September 10, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Scotiabank and the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, a nonprofit charitable trust working to make the cyber world a safer place, have collaborated to host an inaugural charity event in Canada. “Scotiabank Golf 4 Cyber Safety” will take place on September 13 and aims to raise awareness of the need for cyber safety education for children, parents and senior citizens across Canada. With the funds raised, the Center and Scotiabank plan to provide local schools with the Center’s Safe and Secure Online cyber safety education materials.

Safe and Secure Online includes Garfield’s Cyber Safety Adventures for children in first to sixth grade. Developed by the Center and legendary cartoonist Jim Davis, the Adventures include cartoons, comic books, posters, trading cards, and stickers that show Garfield and friends tackling cyber safety issues such as privacy, the dangers of posting online, online etiquette, cyberbullying, and more.

Greg Thompson, CISSP, Chair of the Center’s Board of Trustees and Vice President and CISO for Manulife, said, “We are seeing a groundswell of interest among cybersecurity professionals and firms around the country to help people, especially children, protect themselves online. We mobilized the (ISC)2 Toronto Chapter and several locally based, global companies to capitalize on this momentum to help local schools deliver these all-important lessons to kids.”

“Scotiabank is pleased to support this initiative and contribute to the education of safe cyber practices,” said Steve Hawkins, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer at Scotiabank. “Our commitment is to help make a measurable and lasting impact on our global communities and support organizations that are committed to helping young people reach their infinite potential. At Scotiabank, we believe this is an investment in the long-term security, stability and growth of our communities.”

Additional sponsors include Akamai Technologies, Centrify, Crowdstrike, Intercast Staffing, Splunk, and Tanium. For last-minute registration and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Mr. Thompson at gthompson@isc2.org.

Thompson continued, “Safe and Secure Online allows us to use our skills and expertise to give back to our communities and to help vulnerable groups protect themselves. Unlike other programs that rely on scare tactics to get kids’ attention, we want to empower kids to have a positive online experience, become the masters of their online presence, arm them with resources and feel comfortable asking for help when they need it.”
