Christina Applegate Shares TMI Update on Health Amid 'Scary' MS Battle

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Christina Applegate is pulling back the curtain on her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis

The 53-year-old actress revealed to cohost Jamie Lynn Sigler the physical toll that MS has taken on her body over the past few years on the Tuesday, March 18 episode of her MeSsy Podcast.

"For three years, since I was diagnosed, I've been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up and diarrhea and pain," she shared. "They've done every test known to man on me, put so much radiation into my body from CT scans to everything else."

Also in the episode, Applegate explained how she recently discovered a potential link between her MS symptoms and digestive issues when answering a question from a fan who struggled with a similar problem. The Dead to Me star advised listeners who suffer from similar symptoms to consider discussing motility issues with their doctors, as MS can slow down the functioning of vital organs. "If I have to poop, I puke," she bluntly confessed."

Applegate also explained how her neurologist doesn't think the two issues are related, and "says that's not an MS thing." She continued, "There's got to be a correlation here, and I'm not a doctor. I'm not giving medical advice. I'm just saying, just think about that, OK? Because I'm in the middle of the same exact situation, and it f**ing sucks, and it's scary."

The Married With Children actress humorously advised, "Always have a little trash can next to your toilet. Because you can do both without it being messy." She then admitted while laughing, "I had one yesterday."

Back in November 2024, Applegate revealed on the podcast that she "[lays] in bed screaming. Like, the sharp pains, the ache, the squeezing," referring to her illness. She also revealed in the episode that she struggles to do daily tasks and "can't open bottles now."

Applegate first experienced MS symptoms in 2019 but wasn't officially diagnosed until two years later in 2021.
