CRFU UNDER 16 SHIELD FINAL

Bude 22 Penzance and Newlyn 21

RILEY Drewery notched a late penalty to give Bude the most dramatic of victories on home soil on Sunday.

The full-back kept his nerve with three minutes to go, before the visitors’ who saw their fly-half sin-binned for disagreeing with the decision, missed a three-point chance to win it of their own late on.

On a beautiful day in North Cornwall which also saw the Plate and Cup finals being held, the visitors took an early lead despite some fine tackling from flanker Oliver Wainman.

However the hosts responded quickly and a tap penalty allowed Lucas Bisby to break through and score, which was added to by George Eaton’s conversion (7-7).

Bude's defence, supported by man-of-the-match Enzio Cottrell at centre, held strong under pressure and they were rewarded when Wainman's tackle caused a Penzance error, allowing winger James Fenwick to add another home try which Eaton converted.

Penzance started the second half well and following a loose free-kick, their winger scored.

Scrums were fiercely contested, and Penzance broke the deadlock with another try, again converted (21-14).

Near the match's conclusion, flanker Dylan Dumbleton capitalized on a charged-down clearance kick to score, but the missed conversion left Bude trailing by two with time running out.

Bude applied consistent pressure near the try line, benefiting from multiple Penzance penalties, including one leading to a yellow card and Drewery kept his nerve from in front of the posts.

Penzance responded and had a kickable opportunity to win it, but they missed, sparking wild celebrations from the hosts.
