Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Madison x MKE guitar hero Graham Hunt just shared the news that he’s now on indie label Run For Cover Records. To celebrate the momentous event, he offered up his first single for the label, “I Just Need Enough,” a short and shuffling song about love — “but it’s not a love song,” Hunt explained.
He pointed out this is not only the first song he’s written for the new label, but also the first on a new guitar. “A friend and I were out walking, and we ran into an old high-school teacher of his. He asked if I wanted a guitar,” Hunt shared. “He didn’t play it, and he thought someone should. This is the first song I wrote on it.”
The theme of the track is summed up in this line: “The endearment you save for your bodega guy? Can we extend it to the rest of the earth?.” Hunt explains further that he’s making room just for what works in this moment, feeding a newfound awareness of his own needs and the needs of the world around him at large. Writing about that on a gifted guitar seems integral to the story:
I hold sheltеr in my heart
For those down the wrong path
And thosе they tread upon
And who look at them and laugh
For those that would do wrong
And also those who judge
I don’t need no mausoleum
Baby, I just need enough
