The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor witnessed pro-Palestinian protests during the commencement ceremony on Saturday morning. Protestors, mostly students, chanted 'don't hide' and 'genocide' slogans, interrupting the graduation proceedings. They were wearing keffiyehs and graduation camps, holding Palestinian flags.
Protestors also marched down the center aisle toward the stage at Michigan Stadium during the commencement, CBS News reported. After the speaker invited the crowd to join the school's 'Go Blue' chant, the demonstrators shouted: “Regents, regents, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide,” according to the New York Times.
In a while, a plane could be seen flying around a stadium. A message on the jet read: “Divest from Israel now! Free Palestine!” A counterprotest plane was then spotted with a banner that read, “We stand with Israel. Jewish lives matter”, CBS News reported.
“You are ruining our graduation,” one person in the audience was heard said referring to the police asking protestors to move to the back of the venue, according to the New York Times.
Videos of the protest surfaced on social media.
Meanwhile, the University of Southern California said it is increasing security and Los Angeles Police Department officers will remain on campus through commencement.
"As we approach commencement, we have added more private security ambassadors, and we have stationed LAPD officers on campus. This will continue through commencement," USC Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief David Carlisle said in an email to CNN. On April 25, USC canceled the main-stage graduation, which was scheduled for May 10.
