Arkansas state trooper arrests West Memphis bank robbery suspect after pursuit into Memphis

An Arkansas State Police trooper on Friday helped arrest a man wanted in a West Memphis bank robbery after a chase that led across the Mississippi River into Memphis, a state police news release states.

Around 11:43 a.m., state police got word that West Memphis police were pursuing a suspect, later identified as Freddie Najil, 35, who was fleeing in a stolen vehicle from the scene of an armed bank robbery on Shoppingway Boulevard in West Memphis, the release states.

A state trooper, who is not identified in the release, took charge of the pursuit and trailed Najil over the Interstate 55 bridge into Memphis, where Najil ditched his vehicle and ran, the release says.

The trooper chased Najil across a set of railroad tracks and was able to capture him around 11:50 a.m. near the intersection of West Carolina Avenue and Channel 3 Drive, the release states.

Najil had a gun and money on his person, the release says, although it did not state how much money he had. Najil was being held in the Shelby County jail in Memphis on Friday evening, the release states.
